Four Ironwood students performed in Wisconsin Choral Directors Association honors choirs on the campus of Lawrence University last Saturday. Hailey Johnson sang in the treble choir, Kali Traczyk and Noah Hofstede sang in the tenor/bass choir, and Aidan Bach sang in the Vocal Jazz Ensemble. The VJE is relatively new, and Aidan is the first student from Michigan to sing in that group. Aidan auditioned and was chosen as one of sixteen students from the entire state of Wisconsin (and our part of Michigan) to perform in the VJE. Congratulations to all four students for excellent performances!
On Friday, Mrs. Kariainen took twelve Ironwood art students to the Oulu Glass Gallery in Brule, Wisconsin. Students attended three workshops. In the thermal plastic session, students were able to work with thermal plastic to make small artistic shapes. In the painting studio, students learned about various methods of painting. In the glass session, students created a small piece of colorful glass. It was a fantastic field trip!
Two Hour Delay for Tuesday, January 16, 2024
Due to the extremely cold Wind Chill predicted for tomorrow morning, Ironwood Area Schools will be starting after a Two Hour Delay.
The Gogebic County Community Education Program is looking for advertisers for the 2024 yearbook. Full, half, and quarter pages are available for purchase. Email Lisa Tervonen with questions at lisa.tervonen@ironwoodschools.org, or send the completed form to the address listed. A hard copy of this form is also available in Suite T-023C, located at the Gogebic Community College. The deadline for advertisements is March 1, 2024.
January is School Board Recognition Month!
The key to a brighter future for Michigan’s children is a strong public education system. Every day, students count on public schools to help prepare them for a successful future. Whether they understand it or not, they count on adults across the state ensuring they have access to resources to help them learn, keep their buildings safe and have qualified teachers to guide them. It takes a pure, unwavering commitment to a community to make this all possible.
Yet, at the end of the day, the true superheroes contributing to the success of our students are just ordinary citizens with extraordinary dedication to public schools—our school board members. These individuals approach their volunteer work like it is a full-time job and, for some, they value their work on the board as more important than their chosen profession.
Their job is to establish a vision for the education program, design a structure to achieve that vision, ensure schools are accountable to the community and strongly advocate for continuous improvement in student learning. The job of a school board member is tough, the hours long and the thanks few and far between. Too often we’re quick to criticize school board members without really understanding the complex nature of their decisions. We have to remember to take time to thank them for their untiring efforts.
The month of January marks the observance of School Board Recognition Month. This is an opportunity to show our year-round appreciation for these servant leaders and begin to better understand how local trustees work together to prepare today’s students to be tomorrow’s leaders. We encourage you to join with others throughout our community, state and nation to salute the individuals who provide grassroots governance of public schools.

Carrie Witzel Crook from Burton EMS visited Ms. Griebel's 4th grade students during art class to show them what is made at Burton. The students were very interested to learn about the types of products that Burton designs for customers. Half of the class will be creating advertisements for The Globe to run in their Newspapers in Education 2024 edition, which usually comes out in March.
Congratulations to Ironwood Middle School Band students who were selected for the NWMA All-Conference Band Festival in Maple, WI. Almost 80 Students from 11 participating schools across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan spent the day rehearsing and performed an evening concert under the direction of Joe Kasparek.
